Meeting Minutes

For

May 17 & 18, 2007

  Binghamton , NY

 

 

The following is a summary of our most recent meeting. Please let Steve Smith know as soon as possible if anything has been omitted or reported in error.

 

  • Introductions
  • Round table introductions for new members.
  • Steve Smith announced the RETIRMENT of ROBERT MANVELL.  We all thank Robert for his many years of participation and support for the NYSDLC

 

  • Texas Distance Learning Conference
    • http://www.txdla.org/index.asp
    • Eliz, Debra and Jeff reported on their positive experiences at the TxDLA conference.  We all felt that the conference lent itself to the instructional elements of education. 

 

  • What grants available for distance learning technology acquisition/who has received a grant and what was the process?
  • We talked about the RUS grant it’s changes and history. 
  • Motorola Grant - Sharon Kaiser
  • Jim Sharp is a recommended Polycom Grant writer
  • Discussion followed: many shared their grant writing experience
  • Tech Prep is a requirement for HS/Community Colleges at Tech Prep Programs at BOCES?

 

  • Recruiting Teachers for Distance learning Courses
  • Mike Bayba finds if you can get one person “hooked” he asks them to meet with other teachers that might be potential teachers.  When an initial discussion takes place with a guidance councilor and/or administration, an experienced teacher is encouraged to attend as well.  Pay some of the experienced teachers to come in and train the new teacher recruits.  This is more meaningful to the teacher than if it comes from BOCES technical staff. 
  • Suggested that veteran teachers from different areas in the state have an opportunity to network via DL. 
  • We talked about our end of the year “thank you” dinners.  We all have an agenda and purpose.  Mike B. suggested this link if you plan to purchase incentive awards for staff. http://www.bagmasters.com/  Talked about having teachers meet before the school year begins to network and make instructional connections.  A DL study group may be a solution. 

                              

  • Video Conference (VC) Planning, Resources, Classroom to Classroom
  • Still facing pockets of enthusiasm for VC.
  • Robert suggested that as an organization we might want to be more active in an ongoing way through out the year regarding VC. 
  • Discussion regarding the role of VC in global learning.  (Global Leap http://www.global-leap.com/)   
  • The Jazz Project www.thejassproject.org  Michelle suggested we use this project to template a similar project for New York State.
  • Mike suggested a summer planning to create a year long VC calendar that aligns with their classroom goals.  July 24, Michel is having this meeting in her area; Mike B. would like to connect to her so his region might network with them. 
  • Video Conference for in district transitions.  I.e. elementary to MS, MS to HS.  HS to college. 

 

  • Desktop Video Conferencing
  • A conversation around the “true” mobility of VC units ensued.  Firewall/ Security issues were discussed. 
  • Skype…www.skype.com   Discussed how it takes idle bandwidth and uses it for its own purposes.  OPhone http://www.openh323.org/
  • The question of who is using web-n-r’s to connect students and teachers.  IPod’s are being used across the state in a variety of ways.  Jeremiah suggested we start the discussion of content building for I Pods and web streaming.  Please put on next agenda as an area to explore

Life-size VC www.lifesize.com is High def of the future now.  Phil has piloted this equipment.)

  • Best Online Practices 
  • K12.com is a product promoted by Chuck Payne.  He is directly targeting   districts.  Discussion followed regarding the choosing and using of online curriculum.  Up to 6 credits can be awarded for each student through DL/Online Distance Learning
  • Web Casting Successes
  • Robert H Jackson for Justice Project, Mike Bayba is working with this project, for web casting.  He gave a brief history of what the project is and how it is growing. Works with U Buffalo to web cast the events.
  • Bring a List of Unwanted Equipment
  • Steve Smith stated that if he is sent lists of unwanted or needed equipment, he will post it to the listserv for interested people.

 

  • NYSCASTE/NYSSBA 
  • NYSCATE needs to have demos of best practices.  Mike suggested that the Sunday workshop be a teacher workshop to develop collaborative projects, with best practices, demo.  Video Collaboratorys, Sharon, Michelle, Renee, Donna, Debra, Eliz, Denise Doctor, Tami and Sarah will head of the committee to put together a program.  Eliz and Debra will coordinate the vendor sponsorship.  Full Day Workshop committee, Mike B., Arndea, Sarah, Michelle, and Jennifer.
  • Debbie Baker: Logistic Manager

Booth: Informational and virtual experiences.
Workshop: Develop teacher skills in DL.

  • We will not participate in NYSSBA this year.
  • Web page discussion
  • Eliz will take a look at Steve’s server and software before committing to maintain the site.  Sarah and Donna will help to maintain content.  Mike S. suggested toup our registration fee to help fund a web master.  Mike B. will check with his web master to get a rough idea of cost.  Discussion followed. 
  • Since the meeting, Broome BOCES has hired a Webmaster and he is maintaining our website. Problem resolved.

DAY 2

  • Round Table
  • Excellent interactive discussions on the capacity, future, initiatives and implications Second Life may have in education took place.  Andréa and Jerhamiah gave an in depth description of their experiences in developing Second Life. 
  • Renee talked about Cornell Theory Center, they are locked down in a different way.  Contact at Cornell, Margaret Corbett. A conference in Second Life , Second Life Best Practices in Education Conference 2007.
  • Hosting Course Needs  Break out session discussion

 

Before we broke out to our instruction/technical

  • Instructional
    • Where do you CoSer the Second Life ( Model Schools, Distance Learning)
    • Watching and controlling dialogue in the chat area for students?  Who is the resource in Second Life? Discussion: Why would it be any different in SL than in the classroom?  The teacher is responsible.  Expectations need to be made clear right from the beginning. 
    • Legal issues will need to be addressed with records retentions as email processes are developed.
    • Statewide elements of collaboration.  Twice.cc, CLC… Point is made why would we recreate content when it is already done.  We could take their concepts and retrofit to our needs.  Michelle brought up the Jazz Project training for teachers to learn how to use DL in all its formats.  We could consider developing this training for NYS. 
    • Add a Blackboard to our website. Michelle will resend the link with usernames and passwords.  dl-btboces.org
    • Instructional Group broke up into subcommittees to plan the NYSCATE Day. 

Dialogue continued as we narrowed the scope and sequence of the NYSDLC, for the day long session and mini workshops at the booth. 

Subcommittee meeting date:
May 20 9-11 the Instructional committee will meet.  Sarah will schedule the bridge connection. 

  • Holly talked about how they are using I2 experimentally.  She reports that some connections are good some are not.  Eire 2 has I2 and they have done some things with the National Archives.  Districts are taking the lead in his area because it is free and doesn’t need the support of the BOCES technical staff.  They report that it was outstanding quality.

 

  • Technical Report Out:
  • High Def and what it means to DL. 
  • Planed a “Techies”meeting for July 26th at Broome BOCES.  A rough agenda has been developed. 
  • Developing a list of surplus equipment that others might be able to use.
  • Decided we would like to meet the morning of the first day of the regular NYSDLC meetings.
